Status for Khursheda Khanam (January 18, 2006)!

At least 30 supporters gathered outside the Montreal constituency office of Pierre Pettigrew, Liberal MP in the Parc Extension neighbourhood to demand status for Khursheda Khanam. Khursheda is a non-status migrant from Bangladesh who has lived and worked in Montreal for six years, mainly as a low-wage worker in the textile industry. Khursheda accrued a large debt, from loan sharks, to pay to have her husband’s body sent back to Bangladesh after his unexpected death. Those debts put her security at risk if deported to Bangladesh. Khursheda currently lives without status, and can be deported at any time. However, her support committee is mobilizing to cancel her deportation order, and gain permanent status.
