Solidarity Visit with Sergio Loreto -- January 20, 2006 -- San Lorenzo Church Toronto
On January 20, 2006, one-day prior to a picket outside of Immigration Minister Joe Volpes election offices, a delegation from Solidarity Across Borders met with Sergio Loreto inside the San Lorenzo Church in Toronto. Sergio has been in sanctuary inside the church since the fall of 2004. He is originally from Guatemala, and has lived in Canada for 18 years. He is married with 3 children. According to Padre Hernan Astudillo, pastor of the church: If Sergio is refused status, it is the Prime Minister himself who will have to take sanctuary. We will build from the grassroots for justice. Solidarity Across Borders members also brought greetings from Kader Belaouni, a migrant originally from Algeria who took sanctuary inside a Montreal church in January 2006.
