Sudanese residents in Canada demonstrate in Ottawa against the Cairo Massacre
OTTAWA, January 16, 2006 -- Over 150 predominantly Sudanese residents of Canada demonstrated outside both the Egyptian Embassy and the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) offices in Ottawa, demanding justice for the victims and survivors of the Cairo Massacre, and for all Sudanese refugees. On December 30, 2005, Egyptian police forcibly removed Sudanese refugees from a camp outside the offices of the UNHCR in Cairo. About 3000 Sudanese refugees had set up the camp on to pressure the UNHCR to resettle Sudanese refugees in third countries, as well to protest their unfair treatment by Egyptian authorities. The police aggression resulted in the death of more than two-dozen protesters, mainly women and children. Several hundred protesters were injured, and many refugees died for lack of medical care afterwards. Many of the arrested protesters are facing deportation from Egypt. Many other refugees are missing.
