Naterica, Gary's partner, holds a placard at the picket. They originally met in Montreal. Together, they have raised a son and three daughters.

Gary Freeman was arrested on July 27, 2004, outside the Toronto Reference Library, where he worked as a research assistant for the previous 14 years, along with Naterica. He has been in custody since that time, facing removal to the United States.
