Second Humanitarian Application in Canada Sanctuary Case Rejected! Abdelkader Belaouni remains in Sanctuary

Abdelkader Belaouni sees no alternative but to remain in sanctuary at St-Gabriel's church in Montreal

MONTREAL, September 14th 2006 -- Abdelkader Belaouni (Kader) announced today, at a press conference held at St-Gabriel’s church in Montreal, that he would remain in Sanctuary, despite the fact that his application to stay in Canada on Humanitarian and Compassionate grounds was rejected by Immigration Canada. Refugee rights groups and sanctuary advocates fear that the government decision to refuse his application reflects a disturbing trend in federal government policy with respect to Sanctuary cases. Angela Portnoy and her family of 5, in Sanctuary in a Newfoundland church for nearly one year, also saw their application on humanitarian grounds rejected in the past weeks. Such refusals were unprecedented before the current Conservative government took power. Dozens of Belaouni's supporters - representatives of church organizations, community groups, NGOs, and MPs, as well as individuals - graphically demonstrated their commitment to supporting his campaign, by forming a human chain around St-Gabriel's church, where Belaouni will remain until government officials regularize his status. While the decision is a disappointment to Belaouni, he is determined not to give up. "It is not easy to give up now. I will continue to fight."
