Lebanon: Opposition Sit-in December 2006
Lebanon's political opposition has maintained an open-air demonstration in central Beirut since December 1st, 2006. The Lebanese opposition's political support is diverse with more than 10 political parties supporting the ongoing demonstration in the heart of Beirut which is being lead by Hezbollah. Demands of the opposition have focused on securing more political representation in the current government and instituting economic policies that benefit Lebanon's most impoverished. As an echo of the 2006 Israeli attack on Lebanon the opposition has highly criticized the cozy relationship between the current government of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and the U.S. government. Mary Foster a respect community activist from Montreal and member of Tadamon! Montreal recently traveled to Beirut, Lebanon on a political delegation and participated in the first days of the ongoing opposition sit-in in central Beirut. This photo essay documents the political voices and elements of Lebanese society which have been taking to the streets for over two months calling for political change.
